Jim Sergeant Farewell

Jim Sergeant, the Albacore Park's long time manager, retired from that position effective 1 April 2011. Jim came to the park as an unpaid volunteer in 1987, two years after Albacore was opened to the public. For many of his 25 years at the Park, Jim was the sole employee. During the winter months, he only worked five days a week. In the summer, Jim was at the Park every day from Memorial Day to Columbus Day.

At his retirement party on 26 March at Rosa's Restaurant in Portsmouth, Jim was presented a framed picture of Albacore as she rests in her basin, a Certificate of Appreciation from the PPMMA Board of Directors, gift cards and model of Phase IV Albacore made by Cold War Submarines, Inc. The inscription on a brass plate attached to the model base reads as follows:

By the
Port of Portsmouth Maritime Museum
Association Board of Directors and
the Friends of Albacore

On April 2nd, Jim and his well packed van headed to Florida via the Auto Train on a one-way trip. He left his battered snow shovel behind since the chances of snow in Orlando are slim.
