USS ALBACORE (AGSS 569)

NEWSLETTER #85

November 2019

Now that the construction of the connector road (Submarine Way) between the Route 1 By-Pass and Market Street has been completed, the former street address for Albacore Park (600 Market Street) is no longer accurate. Accordingly, the Park needed a new business address. After he had a discussion with the local Post Office Delivery Supervisor, Ken Herrick (PSMA President) was advised that the City of Portsmouth was responsible for naming streets and assigning street numbers. Accordingly, Ken sent a letter to the City, an excerpt appears below.

“The Portsmouth Submarine Memorial Association (PSMA) has, many times in the past, expressed a preference for 569 as a street number for Albacore Park.  Albacore’s Hull Number is AGSS 569 and the number 569 is prominently displayed on ALBACORE’s Sail.  Since the Post Office has no preference for a street number, and since the lack of developable land abutting Submarine Way makes it very unlikely that any additional numbers will be needed for the new street, we (PSMA) believe that 569 would be a very appropriate street number for Albacore Park.”

It was a no-brainer. You can use the new Albacore Park address of 569 Submarine Way, Portsmouth, NH 03801 when sending correspondence.

On September 14th , the Park put on its annual Navy History Day celebration with free admission for everyone.

Recently relieving Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Commander Captain Daniel Ettich provided the principal address. This year’s theme was “Portsmouth Built” and featured displays of the submarines Albacore, Squalus, Dolphin and Thresher.

The day began with Thresher Base of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. (USSVI) holding its monthly meeting. A number of our Albacore shipmates manned spaces within the boat during the day and provided insight into life on board as visitors passed through. There were numerous display booths on the Park grounds several of which featured teams from other museums. This year saw the first appearance of a food truck at the Park.

One of the high lights of the day was a ceremony of advancing former Petty Officer 1 st Class Aaron Goldstein, a member of the Sea Cadets - New Hampshire SSN 778 Division, to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. His proud parents pinned on his collar devices and settled a Chief’s cap on his head.

Late afternoon showers didn’t put much of a damper on the day. Thanks to many helping hands, the Park was cleaned up and set in a condition to receive visitors on Sunday. Park Executive Director Patti Violette expressed overall satisfaction with the day’s events and was particularly thankful for Captain Ettich’s participation.

Until next time, shipmate,
